Josefina de Vasconcellos was active as a sculptor since the early 1920s almost until her death in 2005. Born in England in 1904, the only child of a Brazilian diplomat and an English Quaker mother, she is a younger contemporary of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. In the years following the First World War she studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then in Paris with Bourdelle, then in Florence with Andriotti. But as an artist she has followed her own individual path, always believing that sculpture has a role to play as an inspirational force in society.
This biography, which contains 32 pages of photographs from a unique collection, charts the extraordinary life of a woman who faced many challenges and disappointments, yet, sustained by her sincere Christian beliefs, managed to continue working into great old age. Although she maintained a studio in London for many years, her home was in the Lake District, with her husband, the painter Delmar Banner. Various versions of her best-known work, the large-scale public sculpture Reconciliation, are situated in the Hiroshima Peace Park, Coventry Cathedral, on the site of the Berlin Wall and in the grounds of Stormont Castle, Belfast.

Dr Margaret Lewis wrote the authorised biography of the crime writer Ngaio Marsh (Chatto and Windus, 1991) and a critical biography of Ellis Peters (Seren, 1994,2003). She has taught English Literature and Creative Writing to undergraduates, adults, Open University students and writing groups. She worked closely with Josefina in writing this book.
